This advertisement is to notify of a public consultation for a Safe Routes to School Scheme for:
• Scoil Chroi Naofa, Athenry
Under Section 38 of the 1994 Road Traffic Act, a Road Authority may in the interest of public safety and convenience of road users provide such traffic calming works as it considers desirable in respect of a public road in its charge.
Galway County Council are now inviting submissions from the public on the proposed Safe Routes to School Scheme at the following location:
• R347 Athenry, Co Galway
A summary of the proposed measures for the scheme are as follows:
Provision of two additional raised pedestrian zebra crossings (adjacent to North Gate Pillars, and on Caheroyn Road)
Enhancement of one existing pedestrian zebra crossing (Tuam Road)
Tightening of junctions/ footpath enhancement
Raised uncontrolled crossing at the entrance to the Creche
Provision of road markings and Safe Routes to School signage on all approach roads to the school.
Enhancement of footpaths locally and inclusion of pencil bollards along the kerb line.
Further information including drawings, which illustrate the proposed works for the scheme, is available online on https://consult.galway.ie/ where a portal will be available from Friday 6th Mar 2026 at 12:00pm to Friday 20th Mar 2026 at 12:00pm. Additionally, the information may also be inspected, during normal working hours at: Galway County Council, Aras an Chontae, Prospect Hill, Galway, H91 H6KX during the same time period noted above. Please note that all proposals are subject to funding.
Representations relating to the above-mentioned scheme may be made in writing to the Active Travel Team, Galway County Council, Aras an Chontae, Prospect Hill, Galway, H91 H6KX or electronically via https://consult.galway.ie/. All submissions will be reviewed and considered and may, if feasible inform the design.
The latest date for receipt of such representations is 12pm on Friday 20th Mar 2026.
