NOTICE IN RELATION TO SPECIFIED DEVELOPMENT
Notice is hereby given pursuant to the provisions of Section 179 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended) and Article 81 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (as amended) that Galway County Council proposes carrying out the following works:
Athenry Town Public Realm Enhancement Project Phase 1 on North Gate Street, Davis Street, Burke’s Lane, Cross Street and The Square Athenry to include:
• Redesigned paved areas along North Gate Street, Davis Street, Burke’s Lane, Cross Street and The Square to improve pedestrian infrastructure along with new surfaces, lighting, hard and soft landscaping and street furniture in this area. (including works within the curtilage of Protected Structures at The Square (Market Cross) and Cross Street, RPS ID Numbers 3975, 3976,3977,3978,3979,3980,3981)
• Provision of a new pedestrianised civic/public space at The Square and Burke’s Lane after 11am daily. (incorporating Athenry Market Cross which is a Recorded Archaeological Monument GA084-0001020 and a Protected Structure RPS ID 3975)
• Undergrounding of overhead ESB cables and where required removal of existing infrastructure including same associated with Protected Structures at Cross Street, RPS ID Numbers 3976,3977,3978,3979,3980,3981.
• Provision of new pedestrian crossings throughout the scheme.
• Provision of new parking arrangements and enhanced pedestrian civic spaces throughout the scheme.
• Provision of tree planting and cycle parking facilities throughout the scheme.
• All other associated site and ancillary works at North Gate Street, Davis Street, Burke’s Lane and The Square, Athenry Townland, Athenry, Co. Galway, including site tie in works at Bridge Street, Barrack Street, McDonalds Lane and Clarke Street.
• The subject works are proposed to take place within Athenry’s Architectural Conservation Area (ACA). The subject site also lies within the zone of archaeological potential for the historic town of Athenry GA084-001.
An Appropriate Assessment screening report and Environmental Impact Assessment screening report in respect of the development have been carried out and are available for inspection. The reports concluded that a full EIAR is not required and that the development does not need to proceed to Stage 2 Appropriate Assessment. Where any person considers that a development proposed to be carried out would be likely to have significant effects on the environment, he or she may, at any time before the expiration of 4 weeks beginning on the date of publication of the notice referred to in article 81(2), apply to An Bord Pleanála for a screening determination as to whether the development would be likely to have such effects.
Plans and particulars of the proposed development will be available for inspection or for purchase for a fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of making a copy, during normal office hours (Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 4.00pm (excluding Bank Holidays and Public Holidays) for a period of 4 weeks from Friday the 17th of November 2023 until Friday the 15th of December 2023, at the following locations:
• Galway County Council, Planning Department (Public Counter), Áras an Chontae, Prospect Hill, Galway, H91 H6KX (Purchase and Inspection); and,
• Galway County Council, Athenry Area Office, Old Church Street, Athenry, Co. Galway, H65 C992 (Inspection Only).

Submissions or observations in relation to the proposed development, dealing with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area in which the development would be situated, may be made in writing to The County Secretary, Galway County Council, P.O. Box No. 27, Áras an Chontae, Prospect Hill, Galway, H91 H6KX; or in electronic format via the special website at https://planning.localgov.ie/en/search/application (LGMA online portal) to arrive not later than Friday the 12th of January 2024.
