Follow the transformation of Tuam Station House as this landmark regeneration project progresses from a long-derelict historic building into a vibrant new enterprise, innovation and community hub for Tuam.
Galway County Council is leading an ambitious project to breathe new life into Tuam’s historic Station House, transforming a long-vacant and underutilised building into a modern, multi-purpose facility that will create new opportunities for enterprise, innovation, education and community activity.
Located on Sean Purcell Road, the Station House occupies an important place in Tuam’s architectural and transport heritage. Its redevelopment represents a significant investment in the town’s future, demonstrating how historic buildings can be sensitively restored and repurposed to meet the needs of a modern, thriving community.
A vision for Regeneration
The project forms part of Galway County Council’s wider vision for the regeneration of Tuam, building on the objectives of the Tuam Regeneration Masterplan. The Masterplan identifies the former railway station and surrounding lands as an important opportunity for town-centre renewal, recommending the restoration and reuse of historic buildings alongside the creation of new spaces for employment, enterprise and community activity.
The Station House redevelopment is a key element in realising this vision. The proposed facility will incorporate individual enterprise suites, a dedicated podcast studio, café and canteen facilities, together with flexible multi-purpose accommodation for community events, educational activities and collaboration. It is intended to provide an accessible and welcoming environment that supports local businesses, entrepreneurs, creative industries and the wider community.
Planning, Partnership and Investment
The project has progressed through a comprehensive programme of planning, design development and stakeholder engagement. Galway County Council has secured a 20-year lease agreement with CIE, providing the basis for the long-term redevelopment and management of the building.
Planning permission has now been secured, and O’C&C Architects have been appointed to work alongside Galway County Council in progressing the project through its design and delivery stages.
A major milestone was achieved with the award of approximately €6.6 million in capital funding through the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme (THRIVE), supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Northern and Western Regional Programme 2021–2027. This significant investment, provided through the Northern and Western Regional Assembly, will support the restoration and transformation of the building.
The project also embraces the principles of the New European Bauhaus, promoting a development that is sustainable, inclusive and attractive, while respecting the historic character of the building and its surroundings.

A historic building. A new purpose. A brighter future for Tuam.
In 2025 Galway County Council successfully secured funding from the Northern and Western Regional Assembly through one of Europe’s main Regional Development Funds. THRIVE supports locally developed plans that take an integrated strategic approach to the regeneration of our towns and locally selected projects that assist in creating town centres that function as viable, vibrant, and attractive locations for people to live, work and visit while also functioning as the business, service, social, cultural and recreational hub for the local community.
THRIVE is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Northern and Western Regional Programme 2021-27.
