SUBMISSION ON THE DRAFT GALWAY COUNTY DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2022-2028

Dear Sir/ Madam,

We wish to make this submission to Galway County Council on the Draft Galway County Development Plan 2022-2028. The Draft Plan is currently on public display with submissions or observations invited up to Friday the 30 July 2021 at 4.30pm.

OVERVIEW

This submission comments on the settlement and retail strategies contained with the Draft Development Plan as they relate to of Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.  

Section 5.10 – of the draft development plan – states the following

The Retail Planning Guidelines place a strong emphasis on the importance of delivering vibrant town and village centres. It is further considered in the RPG’s (2012) that this importance on Town Centre vibrancy can be delivered through strict adherence to the provisions of the ‘sequential approach’, which will safeguard the delivery of vitality and viability in town and village centres.

We welcome this statement and request that the develop plan for the county continue to support the development of our Town Centres / the potential / prioritisation of back land development sites connected to the town centre street. The town of Ballinasloe has several such sites, and these should be promoted for development of convenience / comparison retail development.  

We currently have high vacancy rates of retail property within Ballinasloe town centre core and in order to secure the promotion of the town centre – all retail development should be directed to the centre and not out of town sites.
