NOTICE – SECTION 38 
This advertisement is to notify of a public consultation for: 
Headford Active Travel Scheme, Church Road 

Under Section 38 of the 1994 Road Traffic Act, a Road Authority may in the interest of the 
safety and convenience of road users provide such traffic calming works as it considers
desirable in respect of a public road in its charge. Galway County Council proposes to implement an Active Travel scheme at the following locations:

  •  L-2103 Church Road, Headford
  •  L-21031 (Access road to Headford Presentation college)

A summary of the proposed measures for this scheme (subject to funding) are as follows:


L-2103 Church Road

  • Narrowing of the existing carraigeway through widening of footpaths on the Southside of the carraigeway and introduction of a grass verge between the footpath and the carraigeway on both sides. 
  • Implementation of a raised zebra crossing adjacent to the church car park entrance to provide safer linkage between the carpark and the schools opposite. 
  • New pedestrian openings formed in the boundary wall’s to the church carpark and the National school, to segregate vehicles and pedestrians. 
  • Provision of a raised access at the entrance to the church carpark to provide pedestrian priority. 
  • Road markings identifying the presence of schools. 
  • Bollards placed along the kerbs to prevent illegal parking. 

L-21031 (access road to Presentation College) 

  • Junction tightening at the junction with Church Road. 
  • Provision of widened footpaths for the extent of the public road.
  • Implementation of a raised pedestrian crossing to provide safer pedestrian access and linkage with newly widened footpaths and existing footpaths at set-down area.

received, whether in person or in writing will be published after this consultation closes.  

The latest date for receipt of such representations is 12:00pm on Friday 2nd Jan 2026.
