Re: Submission Draft Galway County Development Plan 2022-2028
Galway Metropolitan Area Garraun Urban Framework Plan
A Chara,
With reference to the above draft/planning application:
We have just recently heard about the proposed development for our area. Having lived at this address for 35 years we felt that we should have been formally notified and consulted in advance.
The large scale of the proposed development would impact the lives of our family and our community in Cartron, in a very negative way.
The proposal to prevent us from accessing the Coast Rd. under Cartron bridge, would make a round trip to Oranmore approximately 20kms. Presently it’s a 5km round trip to Oranmore from my home. As we make several daily trips to the village to shop, socialise, access services and visit family who live in the village, this change would make our lives very difficult. We assist with the childcare of our grandchildren on a regular basis and often do the school runs. The additional travel time and cost involved due to the increased mileage as we travel to and from our village, will cause hardship.
For the last 35 years we have enjoyed the countryside around us and the wildlife that frequent our garden. We regularly have birds nesting in the trees and have pheasants, hedgehogs, foxes and hares roaming in our garden. It has taken us years of hard work to develop our garden, which we take great pride in. All the wildlife would be disturbed by the upheaval that this development would cause.
The building phase of this proposed development would cause untold disruption to our lives and to our community. The noise, pollution, and dust in particular for the construction phase of the development over many years would be a huge upset to us all and would be to the detriment of our countryside.
We have serious concerns around the privacy and security of our homes and feel that had residents been consulted in advance of plans being drawn up that consideration would have been given to a buffer zone around the existing homes. The retention of our privacy to our homes is our constitutional right and I would implore Galway County Council to uphold this right.
We are frequent users of the coastline at Cartron for various pursuits such as fishing, diving and swimming. The knowledge of this area and access to it is very valuable to our community; removing our vehicular access to the coastline is not acceptable.
Please give attention to our serious concerns, it is essential that proper and formal consultation with the current residents of the area is undertaken by the council in advance of any plans for development being finalised. The disruption that this development would create, and its impact over many years during construction, would cause huge stress and anxiety for my family.
