Galway County Council’s Draft Climate Action Plan 2024-2029
Pursuant to Section 16 of the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021, Galway County Council has prepared a Draft Local Authority Climate Action Plan 2024-2029.
The Draft Plan sets out how Galway County Council will promote a range of mitigation, adaptation, and other climate action measures, to help deliver on the national climate obligations and the Government’s overall national Climate Objective, which seeks to pursue and achieve, by no later than the end of 2050, the transition to a climate resilient, biodiversity-rich, environmentally sustainable and climate neutral economy.
The draft plan is accompanied by an Environmental Report, prepared in accordance with the European Communities (Environmental Assessment of Certain Plans and Programmes) Regulations 2004 (S.I.435 of 2004 as amended by S.I. 200 of 2011) for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Appropriate Assessment (AA) Natura Impact Report, pursuant to Article 6 of the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC.

The one-month public consultation period for the Draft Climate Action Plan closed on the 11th of December 2023. The six-week public consultation period for the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Environmental Report and Appropriate Assessment (AA) Natura Impact Report will remain open until the 22nd of December 2023. Galway County Council invites any interested parties to make submissions or observations with regard to the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Environmental Report and Appropriate Assessment (AA) Natura Impact Report.

Submissions and observations can be made via:
- Online via https://consult.galway.ie/ Or
- In writing to the Climate Action Unit, Áras an Chontae, Prospect Hill, Galway, H91 H6KX, marked ‘Galway County Council Draft Local Authority Climate Action Plan’.
Submissions or observations can be made within the period specified:
- On the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Environmental Report and Appropriate Assessment (AA) Natura Impact Report from Friday 10th November to Friday, 22nd December 2023 at 4:00pm.
When making a submission or observation please note the following:
- Please make your submission by one medium only, i.e., via the online portal or in hard copy.
- All submissions should include your name and a contact address and, where relevant, details of any organisation, community group or company etc., which you represent.
- Submissions or aspects of submissions relating to the Environmental Reports (Strategic Environmental Assessment Environmental Report and/or Natura Impact Report) should be clearly marked as such.
- In respect of making a submission or observation please note the following: Children or groups or associations representing the interests of children, are entitled, and encouraged to make submissions or observations.
- You should ensure that no vexatious, libellous, or confidential information, including confidential information relating to a third party (in respect of which the third party has not expressly, or impliedly in the circumstances consented to its disclosure) is included in your submission. Galway County Council reserves the right to redact any submission or part thereof that does not comply with this requirement.
- In order to assist us in complying with Data Protection and GDPR please include your name and contact details (and where relevant, details of any organisation, community group or company etc., which you represent) on a separate sheet to the content of your submission/observation. This processing of your personal data is lawful under Article 6 (1) (e) of the GDPR regulations. The Council’s Data Protection Policy is available on the Council website.

- Under the Climate Action Act Plan 2019 and National Climate Change Framework Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act 2015 (as amended) Article 6(1)(c) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2016, and in order to consult with relevant stakeholders in relation to the Climate Change Action Plan, it may be necessary for Galway County Council to collect personal data. This data will be handled as per our privacy statement.
