Loughrea Active Travel Scheme - Non Statutory Public Consultation

Galway County Council, In Partnership with the National Transport Authority, is developing proposals to make it safer and easier to walk, wheel and cycle in Loughrea.

The proposed Active Travel Scheme will improve walking, cycling and road safety along Bride Street, Danesfort Road and Bohercom, creating safer and more accessible connections to schools, residential areas, community facilities and Loughrea Town Centre.

Following Concept Design and Option Development, an Emerging Preferred Option has now been selected. Note that this is a high-level design and further detail of the design is currently being developed as part of the Preliminary Design stage. Feedback from this Non-Statutory Public Consultation will inform the design development.

The Emerging Preferred Option includes:

Danesfort Road (0.6km)

• Wider footpaths on both sides.
• Existing crossing upgraded and an additional crossing provided.
• Safer junctions and continuous footpaths across side roads.

• New planting and rain gardens.

   

Bohercom (0.3km)

• New School Street to improve safety for students while maintaining local access.

• New planting and rain gardens near Rockhaven Junction.

   

Bride Street / Danesfort Road / Bohercom Junction

• New pedestrian and cycle crossings on all approaches.
• Redesigned junction with shorter, safer crossing distances.

• Traffic signals to improve safety and manage peak-time traffic.

   

The proposed scheme will:

• Make walking and cycling safer and more attractive for everyday journeys.
• Improve access to St. Raphael's Secondary School, Loughrea GAA Club, local businesses and the town centre.
• Encourage more students to walk and cycle, helping to reduce congestion at school times.
• Reduce vehicle speeds through traffic-calming measures and raised crossings.
• Improve safety and accessibility for all road users.
• Enhance the local streetscape with new planting and rain gardens.
• Provide better connections between neighbourhoods and key destinations throughout Loughrea.
